Will Mutharika Attend U.N.G.A?

United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is expected to start in September in New York, United States of America where all member countries of UN meet to discuss, debate, and make recommendations on subjects pertaining to international peace and security, including development, disarmament, human rights, international law, and the peaceful arbitration of disputes between countries.

President Peter Mutharika attend each and every Summit.

This year is different, it is surprising because up to date it is not yet known if Mutharika will attend the 74th session of the summit which is expected to start on September 17th in new York, United States of America.

Presidential press secretary Mgeme Kalirani said in an interview that Mutharika is yet to make communications on whether he will attend the summit.

Mutharika – Unsure on UNGA

“The preparation [for the trip to Unga] started a while ago at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and they are ongoing. The preparations do not stop because there is always an assumption that the President would go. So, towards the end around [September] 13th to 15th, it is when the principal, who is the President, would make a decision whether he would go himself or delegate. So, in terms of President’s decision, there is still time but in terms of preparations, they are on course,” Kalirani said.

Aftermath of May 21 tripartite elections, Mutharika, who was declared winner of the disputed elections has never attended any high profile meeting outside the country.

Mutharika has been delegating vice president Everton Chimulirenji and other cabinet ministers on his behalf.
