HIV/AIDS PREVENTION MEASURES RISK WOMEN’S LIVES

Lack of HIV/AIDS prevention measures specifically for women is said to be putting more women at risk of contracting the Virus.

Sexual and Reproductive Health Research African Trust Country Program officer Novice Bamusi said this during a media training and update on the biomedical HIV preventions options agenda.

Bamusi said most HIV prevention measures such as condoms, Circumcision put men in control at the expense of women.

“If you look critically on the available HIV prevention measures, most of them are for men. We have condoms for both men and females but women condoms are not used and basically it is a man who decide whether to use condom or not. Globally we are talking of around 35million people who are living with HIV/AIDS,” said Bamusi.

“If you come to sub-Saharan region you will find that half of the people are living with HIV. So basically we target where there is high prevalence of HIV. In this case we are targeting women because there is high risk among women,” he added.

Malawi records many new HIV infections every year.
