Human Rights Activists Condemn Killing of a Police Officer, Fault Politicians for Fueling Violence

The Human Rights Consultative Committee has condemned the killing of a Police officer during riots between civilians and the law enforcers at Nsundwe in Lilongwe.

Robert Mkwezalamba, chairperson of the committee has made the remarks following the death of a police officer who was killed by civilians on Tuesday.

“It is very disheartening and something that would have been avoided. We condemn the incident in the strongest terms because the right to life is guaranteed in our national instrument particularly the constitution,” he said.

Reports indicate there was high tension as violent protesters blocked Mchinji-Lilongwe road forcing road user’s especially Democratic Progressive Party supporters from traveling to Lilongwe where President Peter Mutharika had a rally in Kawale Township.

According to sources, Police had to chase the rioters to nearby villages while firing teargas canisters but the youthful protesters kept regrouping and fought back with stones killing a police officer in the process.

Meanwhile, Mkwezalamba has faulted politicians for fueling hatred amongst party supporters since election results on May 21st.

Mkwezalamba has however appealed to the law enforcers to bring to book those behind the killing of a police officer.
