LILONGWE COMMEMORATES’ GIRLS INTERNATIONAL DAY

Girls from different parts of Lilongwe on Saturday gathered at Lilongwe Golf Club to commemorate the International Day of the Girl.

Timveni Child and Youth Media Organisation team and some lawyers and entrepreneurs attended the event in order to inspire girls.

Among other things, the girls listened to motivational talks by girls and young women who have made it in life.

Giving her motivational talk, Prisca Chipao, a lawyer and entrepreneur who was also the guest of honor, encouraged the girls to speak out when faced with different challenges, including sexual harassment, to have ambitions and always work hard.

“Dreams are free and dreams do not have gender. When I was young, I always wanted to be a lawyer, but I did not do well in my first attempt in the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examination. So, I had to repeat,” she said.

Timveni project coordinator Ernest Makanda advised the girls to rise up and realize their potential.

“The girls can learn from their friends who have gone through the same path and made it in life. They need to realize the power they have,” he said.

Natasha Banda, a student at Girls Shine Secondary School, said she was glad to be part of the event.

The International Day of the Girl is commemorated on October 11.
