Malawi Law Society Cautions HRDC on Protesting Issues in Court

Malawi Law Society (MLS) has advised organizers of Anti-Ansah demonstrations Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) to stop organizing protest on issues that are in court.

MLS made the communication in a press statement which is calling on members of the public including HRDC to stop dragging matters that are in court to the streets in the name of demonstrating.

We call upon all members of the general public, including but to limited to members of HRDC, while freely and peacefully pursuing rights and freedom in the constitution, t desist from tendency and temptation to assume legal correctness on their perspective on any electoral issues currently directly/indirectly being deliberated upon at the court,” reads part of the statement.

HRDC has been organizing demonstrations calling for the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah for failing to manage May 21 election polls.

On the other hand United Transformation Movement (UTM) President Saulos Chilima and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera are seeking nullification of the presidential results.

Peter Mutharika a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate was declared winner of the disputed elections by the electoral body.
