2 die after drowning in Mchinji

Two men died in Mchinji on Thursday after drowning in two different rivers in the district.

Police identified the two as Vitalisi Domisiano, 58, from Mbachundu village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Zulu and Mlaiketi Sasu, 48, from Chiwayula village in the area of Sub T/A Pitala in the district.

Mchinji Police Public Relations Officer, Kondwani Kandiado said Damisiano drowned after a bridge he was using, gave in and he fell into the river while Mbachundu drowned when he went to the river to inspect his fish traps.

“The bridge which Domisiano was using was damaged by heavy rains hence it collapsed while he was crossing and he drowned in the river. In the other incident, Sasu was swept away by the river after he went there to check his fish traps,” he said.

Kandiado said post-mortem conducted by the district hospital revealed that the two died due to suffocation secondary to drowning.
