MEC Cornered As Plans to Engage South African Lawyers in the Presidential Appeal Case Remains Uncertain Due to Covid-19

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is cornered as its plans to engage two South African lawyers in the presidential appeal case remains uncertain.

This is due to a national lockdown and grounding of all planes in their country due to the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus.

MEC Chief Elections Officer (CEO) Sam Alfandika said the two lawyers were expected to be in the country on April 8.

Alfandika worried that the arrival of the two attorneys is uncertain as there are no flights connecting to Malawi and South Africa at the moment.

The decision to engage the two South African lawyers divided opinion in the country especially with the reported K600 million fee that they charged.

The hearing of the appeal case is expected to start on April 15.

On February 3 the Constitutional Court nullified May 21, 2019 presidential elections and ordered that fresh presidential polls within the period of 150 days.

Malawians are yet to go into polls on July 2.
