Government withdraws its’ decision to challenge lockdown injuction

Government, through the office of Attorney General, has withdrawn its decision to challenge the interlocutory injunction on lockdown
A notice to withdraw was filed this morning in Lilongwe.

Information reaching this publication indicates that the government  is no longer interested to vacate the injunction.

On 14 April, Minister of Health Jappie Mhango announced  that the Malawi would be on lockdown for 21 days from the midnight of Saturday 18 April to midnight on Friday 8 May in an effort to control further spread of the deadly coronavirus.

Some concerned citizens including Members of Parliament Esther Cecilia Katumba and Monica Chang’anamuno and Civil Society Organisations Human Rights Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) and Church and Society of CCAP Synod of Livingstonia successfully obtained an injunction blocking government from effecting a national lockdown.

The High Court ordered that all parities involved should seat down and discuss about  the matter but Attorney General, Kalekeni Kaphale wanted the High Court to withdraw the injunction on lockdown in totality before it convenes for an inter party hearing.
