Four MEC Commissioners summoned by High Court

Four Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Commissioners on Thursday night excused themselves from a media briefing after receiving a High Court summon over their appointments into the electoral body.

MEC Chairperson Dr. Chifundo Kachale disclosed this during a media briefing held in the capital Lilongwe.

The four Commissioners Jean Mathanga and commissioner Linda Kunje and Steve Duwa and Commissioner Nathulu.

“I can confirm that the four MEC commissioners are not here because of the court summons; but am reliably informed that the summons is not stopping them from discharging their duties,” said Kachale.

According to Kachale, the commissioners have been given seven days to respond on the matter.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera who is also torchbearer for Tonse Alliance is challenging the appointment of the four.
