CDEDI hails govt for giving in on an appeal for a waiver on access to Pension Funds

Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has hailed the Tonse Alliance government for allowing employees affected by Coronavirus pandemic to access their Pension Funds.

On Tuesday, CDEDI through its Acting Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa asked the government to waive conditions for the administrations of Pension Funds to allow private school teachers and hospitality workers affected by the COVID 19 measures to access their money during this difficult time.

In an interview with one of the local media houses, Ministry of Finance spokesperson Mr. Williams Banda said those affected should write his ministry to access their money.

Namiwa hailed government for a swift response on the matter.

“CDEDI is impressed with the swift response to the call a move that will save many people from misery.

“CDEDI therefore encouraging concerned individuals to utilise this opportunity,” reads part of the statement.

He added: “CDEDI further expect all public and private institutions to carefully consider our plea on the need to make available face masks on their doorsteps to allow those underprivileged who cannot afford to buy face masks so that they can access services.”

Meanwhile it is not known as to when the schools will be re-opened in Malawi.
