Clashes rage as Mozambique’s neighbours pledge support

Residents continue to flee the port town of Mocímboa da Praia as clashes continue between Mozambican government forces and Islamist insurgents.

The area is close to offshore natural gas projects worth $60bn (£46bn), and was targeted multiple times by militants this year before they managed to seize control of the port last week.

Mozambique’s army later insisted it had regained control of the port, and President Filipe Nyusi also visited the wider province of Cabo Delgado that has been targeted by insurgents since 2017.

Phone lines are still cut and infrastructure has been vandalised.

It comes amid a pledge from regional heads of state declaring their “commitment to support Mozambique in addressing the terrorism and violent attacks,” during a Southern African Development Community (Sadc) meeting.
