Blantyre records 145 motorcycle accidents from January to September this year

Statistics have revealed that Blantyre Police has recorded 145 road accidents involving motorcycles from January to September 2020.

According to the Police spokesperson for the Augustus Nkhwazi said this is higher compared to 55 accidents recorded over the same period in 2019.

Nkhwazi said the Police is worried with motocycle accidents and has urged adherence to road safety regulations

He disclosed most of the accidents occurs along the Chirimba-Zalewa stretch.

“The accidents in 2020 are broken down in the following manner: 14 are fatal, 3 serious, 122 minor and 6 damages only.
However, in the year 2019, 5 were fatal, 1 serious, 44 minors and 5 damages were recorded,” he said.

The Police Traffic department noted some operators are plying on the roads without proper driving lessons, without driving licence, without crash helmets, riding under the influence of alcohol, using undocumented motorcycles and overloading among other causes.

Meanwhile, Police in the city have embarked on a campaign to engage motorcycle operators on road safety.

The police will continue to enforce road traffic regulations and those found not complying will be taken to task and face the long arm of the law.
