DPP convention? When and where? December is here

Malawi’s former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is yet to set date for the party’s first ever national convention after being formed more than 7 years ago.

Many believe the convention will make or break the party, unless it is stage managed as was that of the UDF.

In mid November, the party’s interim leader Peter Mutharika announced that the party’s national convention will take place in December but there are no indications this would be possible.

The party’s newly appointed General Secretary Allan Chiyembekeza only said preparations are under way but could not say when the indaba will be held.

“Something is being done on the ground and once everything is set an official announcement will be made,” said Chiyembekeza.

During the convention, the party will fill all positions which will be up for grabs including that of president who will automatically become the party’s 2014 presidential candidate.

The ruling People’s Party and opposition United Democratic Front have already held their conventions while the Alliance for Democracy also says it will soon go to the convention.
