Parliament Passes 3 Money Bills

Parliament has this morning passed three financial bills authorizing the Minister of Finance to enter into a financing agreement with the International Development Association and European Investment Bank.

Bill No.16 of 2020 (Additional Financing for Southern Africa Tuberculosis and Health Systems Support Project) is expected to borrow over K2 billion and seeks to improve coverage and quality of Tuberculosis control and occupational lung disease services in Malawi.

The bill further seeks to strengthen national and cross-boarder preparedness and response to disease outbreaks.

Bill No. 17 of 2020 (Additional Financing for Lilongwe Water Board Treatment Works III Project) seeks to secure water supply for Lilongwe city and increase access to reliable and quality water and sanitation services for the residents of the city through construction of a 50,000m3 per day water treatment works number 3 to service current and future demands until 2025 through processing and treatment of raw water abstracted from the raised Kamuzu Dam 1.

The Finance Minister has been authorized to borrow the sum of 2.5 million Euros from the European Investment Bank.

Bill No. 18 of 2020 (Governance to Enable Service Delivery Project), seeks to strengthen local authorities’ institutional performance, responsiveness to citizens and management of resources for service delivery. The Bill authorizes to the Finance Minister to borrow about K7 billion.
