DPP still mum on convention

Malawi’s former ruling Democratic Progressive Party DPP is yet to set date for the party’s first ever national convention which many believe will make or break the party.

The party’s newly appointed General Secretary Dr. Allan Chiyembekeza only said preparations are underway but could not say when the indaba will be held.

“Something is being done on the ground and once everything is set an official announcement will be made,” said Dr. Chiyembekeza.

In mid November, the party’s interim leader Professor Peter Mutharika announced that the party’s national convention will take place in December but there are no indications this would be possible.

During the convention, the party will fill all positions which will be up for grabs including that of president who will automatically become the party’s 2014 presidential candidate.

The ruling People’s Party and opposition United Democratic Front have already held their conventions while the Alliance for Democracy also says will soon go to the convention
