At least 15,000 households in Cholera prone townships of Bangwe and Ndirande in Malawi’s commercial city Blantyre will receive chlorine to prevent cholera outbreak this rainy season.
Blantyre district Health office in partnership with Water for People have since launched ant cholera sensitization awareness campaign in the two townships.
Water for People has pumped in a total of K1.6 million in the campaign in which about 15,000 households will receive chlorine.
Speaking in Bangwe Township on Friday, Blantyre DHO’s health education officer Mrs. Chrissie Banda said no cholera case has so far been reported in the city and they want to maintain the stance.
“Prevention is better than cure so this is what has prompted us and Water for People to embark on the ant- cholera sensitization campaign in Ndirande and Bangwe townships where cases of cholera are highly registered almost every year,” explained Banda.
For instance in 2012, out of 402 cholera cases reported in Blantyre city, 118 were registered in Bangwe and 56 from Ndirande Township.
