MHRR Asks Parliament To Review Witchcraft Act

The Malawi Human Rights and Rehabilitation (MHRR) has asked Parliament to fast-track and review the 19911 Witchcraft Act.

MHRR made the call as the House is expected to start its business today, February 22, 2021.

The human rights grouping has also asked parliament to commit more resources towards protecting the elderly and people with albinism since they ae victims of Witchcraft.

Recently, the country has seen a resurgent of attacks and killings of people with albinism while the elderly have been murdered on grounds that they practice witchcraft.

Michael Kayiyatsa executive director of CHRR said the recent surge in attacks on people with albinism is an indication of security lapses hence asking parliament to consider allocating more resources towards their protection.

Meanwhile, Kayiyatsa has urged the August house to fast-track the review of the 1911 witchcraft Act to make sure that it is aligned with society’s perception on witchcraft.

As he explains, the review of the Act can help arrest attacks and killings of the elderly on grounds that they practice witchcraft.
