Divisions Force TUM To Cancel Executive Meeting

Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) Willy Malimba has said the Union’s Executive meeting has been cancelled due to divisions that have ensued in the TUM leadership.

Teachers across the country have not been reporting for work since the schools were opened on February 22, 2021 as they demanding for Covid-19 risk allowance.

After almost a  week of sit in, government has rebuffed the demands of teachers to receive the risk allowance saying that it is pointless.

Second vice president for TUM Rehema Harid led a press briefing in Lilongwe where they announced that they have called off the the stay away they have been holding.

According to Rehema, the decision to end the sit in has been made with an aim of paving way for negotiations with government.

When asked if the decision to call off the strike was reached with the whole leadership, Rehema said it has the blessing of its president despite that he was physically available.

However, Malimba, denied being part of the decision to call off the strike.

Meanwhile, students from government schools in Blantyre have expressed fears that the situation is likely to disturb their preparations for this year’s national examination and their general studies.

The concern comes as currently, students in private schools are normally attending classes.
