UPDATE: Malawi Police Services To Re-Arrest 9 Suspects Who Escaped From Custody

The Malawi Police Service is yet to re-arrest 9 suspects who escaped from custody at Kafukule Police Post in Mzimba district last Thursday.

The 9 comprises 2 murder suspects, 2 defilement suspects and 5 others who were being kept for various theft offences.

They escaped after the officer on duty identified as Thokozani Wilson Livala, who allegedly reported to work drunk, left the cells’ doors open.

This happened after the police officer aged 38 released a defilement suspect who had requested to leave the cell and drink water at his home.

Police Public Relations Officer for the north Maurice Chapola said they are still hunting for the suspects.

Chapola reveals that Livala appeared in court following his arrest on charges of negligence and permitting suspects to escape from lawful custody.

Livala who is being represented by lawyers from the Legal Aid Bureau has since been denied bail by the Mzimba Senior Resident Magistrate Court.

Senior Resident Magistrate Matthews Msiska has since adjourned the case to next Monday, on the 19th of July.
