Chaos as UNIMA Students demonstrate over suspension of classes

University of Malawi (UNIMA) students have taken it to the streets of Zomba demonstrating against the suspension of classes due to internet challenges at the institution.

The institution resorted to online learning as a measure to curb the further spread of novel coronavirus but later on suspended the classes due to the unavailability of gadgets to support the initiative.

On July 13, students also held demonstrations arguing that the WIFI did not have wide coverage.

Earlier today July 26, the students presented an ultimatum to the university’s management to either resolve the challenge within 24 hours or close that school.

According to one of the students, who opted for anonymity, their continued stay on a college campus is proving to be costly since they are not learning.

Later on, the students blocked Saint Charles Lwangwa-Chanco road, before Police fired teargas to dispel the demonstrating students.

Earlier last week, UNIMA Registrar Mary Wasiri revealed that the university is facing logistical challenges in the procurement of the internet gadgets which are being imported from China.
