ACB to interrogate Mutharika on August 17

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) is set to interview former President Peter Mutharika on how his taxpayer identification number (TPIN) was deceitfully used by other individuals while he was in office from August 17, 2021.

ACB Director General Martha Chizuma has confirmed of the development in an interview with the press.

Currently, the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) is talking to former president, Arthur Peter Mutharika’s handlers on modalities of conducting an interview over the use of Tax Payer Identification Number (TPIN) whilst president.

MRA spokesperson Steve Kapoloma said this morning that after the discussion, time of the interview will be set.

Last month, the interview was postponed after Mutharika fell sick.

Information at hand indicates that Mutharika’s TPIN was used to import 800 000 bags of cement worth K5 billion from Zambia and Zimbabwe, a development that also led to the arrest of his personal bodyguard Norman Chisale and State Residences chief of staff Peter Mukhito.

Besides the two aides, other individuals arrested in connection with the scandal were former Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) deputy commissioner general Roza Mbilizi and a Lilongwe-based Asian businessman Ahmed Chunara.
