ZIMBABWE – A man from Nyanga is reported to have reclaimed his lobola cow before he set ablaze his mother-in-law’s house.
30-year-old Abraham Chanakira ran amok on Saturday last week following a dispute with his estranged wife, Emilia Chanakira.
Initially, Chanakira is alleged to have demanded custody of his daughter before he forcibly took her as well as a beast he had paid as part of lobola.
However, six days later, Chanakira is reported to have returned to his in-laws’ homestead and set 10 goats, a fowl run and a goat pen on fire.
The said incident happened in Mapere Village, Mayo, Headlands.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident saying;
“Chanakira went to the homestead and demanded custody of their daughter. He assaulted Emilia and her mother before forcibly taking his daughter as well as a beast he had paid as part of lobola and went away.
He returned six days later and set ablaze Ms Mukova’s bedroom, kitchen hut, goat pen and 10 goats.”
According to the police report, Chanakira had an altercation with Emilia and they went separate ways.
After their separation, Emilia left their matrimonial home and returned to her mother, Agnes Mukova’s homestead in Mapere Village.
Meanwhile, on the fateful day he set Mukova’s homestead on fire, villagers in Mapere heavily assaulted him using logs before handing him over to the police, Manica Post reports.
Chanakira sustained serious injuries during the assault and was taken to Mayo Clinic.
Due to the nature of his injuries, he was later transferred to Rusape District Hospital.
