Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda has cleared rumors surrounding the 60 days amnesty that he issued days ago.
The AG declared 60-day amnesty for corruption suspects. An amnesty had been instituted on all those who might have defrauded government as well as extending to the 77 cash gate files before prosecution authorities.
This did not go well with Former Attorney General, Charles Mhango and the executive director for the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI), Sylvester Namiwa, who questioned the move saying it is a deliberate in order for the Tonse Administration leaders to exonerate themselves from a number of high-profile corruption cases that they are involved in.
According to Chakaka, the Amnesty will not be used to shield anyone, even cabinet ministers.
He added that aim of the amnesty is to recover government funds that were defrauded dating back as far as 2004.
Nyirenda finally assured Malawians that the arrangement would enable those with evidence to come forward so that the evidence could be used to convict many and recover more money as government eyes to recover K50 billion.
