Mphwiyo Case progress delights DPP Kayuni

Director of public prosecutions (DPP), Dr Steven Kayuni has said is he delighted with the speed of the cashgate case of Paul Mphwiyo and 18 others, which started almost seven years ago.

On Tuesday February 15th, 2022, the Lilongwe District Registry, heard the case of a witness in the case, defense number nine, the former Chief Accountant at the Ministry of Tourism, Clemence Madzi.

Madzi said that some transactions in the ministry’s financial system were indeed deleted.

However, it was noted that the implementation of the national budget requires several stakeholders and his office needed to protect the public purse, especially in the 2012/2013 national budget.

“The case of Mphwiyo and 18 others is continuing for the whole week and the defense, accused number 9, was questioned today. The defendant, Mr. Madzi because was the chief accountant at the time of cashgate. The state wants to know the role he played and how the whole cashgate panned out,” said Kayuni.

Mphwiyo and others are facing charges of conspiracy to defraud the government of money amounting to K2.4 billion, money laundering, and theft.

Cashgate occurred in 2013 when billions of government funds were looted under the reign of former president Joyce Banda.
