Kenya’s Goverment breaks silence after youths stoned Raila Odinga’s Helicopter

The Cabinet Secretary for Interior, Fred Matiang’i has directed the National Police Service to investigate and arrest youths involved in the stoning of ODM leader Raila Odinga’s chopper on Friday.

In a statement, Matiang’i condemned the attack, saying that those who planned the attack should also be arrested.

“I call upon the National Police Service to investigate the matter and ensure that all the culprits and their masterminds are made to swiftly and decisively face the consequences of their criminal actions,” he said.

The CS said such attacks take our country back to the days it has worked hard to put behind, which was a result of political intolerance.

“The regrettable incident is a sad and atavistic reminder of the ugly face of violent political intolerance that our beloved motherland has worked hard to consign to the annals of a painful history in the last 14 years,” Matiang’i added.

His statement comes after the former Prime Minister was stoned after attending Mzee Jackson Kibor’s burial in Kabenes, Uasin Gishu County on Friday.

The attack destroyed the chopper’s air shield and vehicles, Odinga said in a statement.

Odinga had pointed accusing fingers at Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago and Soy MP Caleb Kositany for the attack. The two have since distanced themselves from the incident and have condemned the violence.

Governor Mandago promised to take personal responsibility for ensuring that the perpetrators of the attack are arrested.

“I condemn with the strongest terms possible the act of violence directed at the former Prime Minister Rt Hon Raila Odinga after the burial of Mzee Jackson Kibor. Uasin-Gishu is a peaceful county, we will pursue the matter without rest until the perpetrators are all brought to book,” said Governor Mandago in a press statement on Friday evening.

Mr Kositany said: “Sorry about the chopper incident, it’s quite unfortunate, it wasn’t planned, just learned about it on Twitter.”
