Mob Justice for LL suspected Thieves

LILONGWE: Some Mitundu residents in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe have set ablaze two vehicles and destroyed houses and shops of suspected robbers in the area.

A witness Mr. Mekeyasi Helemesi told Zodiak Online that some of the said suspects are seeking the protection of police.

“Some of the suspected robbers are seeking refuge at Mitundu Police Unit, while other suspected robbers have gone into hiding,” said Mr. Helemesi.

He said the angry residents say they have embarked on what they call ‘a campaign to flush out people suspected to be robbers’.

By noon on Monday, the group had demolished about 6 houses and set ablaze two vehicles.

Lilongwe police spokesperson Ramsy Mushani has confirmed the development but asked for more time for the details.

However, Mushani said police officers were moved in to quell the situation.

“We have deployed police officers from Lilongwe Police-led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Paul German to quell the volatile situation,” said Mushani.—Zodiak Online
