Children’s commission roll out delays

The parliamentary Committee and the Community Affairs are worried with the delays in the operationalization of the National Children’s Commission.

On Monday, Committee Chairperson Savel Kafwafwa said the delay has expressed disappointment because the commission was allocated K100 million for its operations in the current financial year.

“The committee will need to talk to the commissioners to make them understand that the budget allocated is applying to children related activities,” he said.

Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare Principal Secretary Roselyn Makhumura said plans to operationalise the commission are at waiting stage.

Makhumura said “I assure you that the commission will be operationalized by the end of this year, there is a recruitment process to be followed.”

The commission, which has been allocated a budget of K100 million in the 2021/22 National Budget, is expected to advise the government on matters relating to children’s rights and welfare, among other functions.
