Human rights advocates call for action to address problem of mob justice

Human rights activists are expressing worry over the continued acts of mob justice in the country, following three mob justice-related murders that occurred in two separate incidents in the past 24 hours.

In one incident, two men were beaten to death by an angry mob after being suspected of stealing 18 cellphones in a barbershop in Nyanthumbi village, Nsanje district.

In another incident, a suspected thief was murdered by an irate mob after attempting to steal items from two houses in Kaning’ina village, Kasungu district.

Robert Mkwezalamba, a human rights advocate, described the situation as unfortunate and said it indicates that people have lost trust in institutions that render justice in the country.

He also attributes the problem to ignorance about how the law works, and called for relevant stakeholders to intensify awareness campaigns on the country’s laws in order to curb the vice.
