Farmers expects low yields due to Cyclone Freddy

Farmers in the country have expressed concern over the low yields they are expected to have due to devastating Cyclone Freddy effects.

Chief Agricultural Officer for Thyolo district Mirriam Ndhlovu, has said that despite all the efforts that farmers placed on their farming activities, Cyclone Freddy has washed away crops, animals and other agricultural resources, a development that has left many farmers in need.

Ndhlovu also said that crops in the district started well due to the good rain but coming in of Cyclone Freddy most of the farmers will not harvest the expected yields as most of the crops were washed away by the heavy rains.

On the same matter, rice farmers from Nambazo and Phaloni villages in Phalombe district are in desperate situation after their rice schemes washed away by flooding water caused by Cyclone Freddy.

Meanwhile, despite farmers performing well in other agricultural activities, the late coming of the Agriculture Input Program and poor markets have also been a setback to most of farmers.
