Massive Gas Explosion Rocks Johannesburg CBD In South Africa, Multiple Injuries Reported

A massive explosion occurred late this afternoon on Wednesday 19 July with a number of injuries reported. JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that an underground gas explosion occurred at Bree Street in the Johannesburg CBD.

Fihla said that emergency services and JMPD officers are on the scene and accessing the extent of the damage and injuries. Many bystanders have reported a strong smell of gas in the area with a part of the street caving in. Officials have cordoned off Bree Street & surrounding streets, as they expressed concern about a possible secondary explosion.

Initial reports indicate a number of people have been injured. At least 24 vehicles, mostly taxis, were damaged when the explosion occurred about 5pm, damaging the road extensively.

Some of the vehicles were lying on their sides, while others had been thrown on top of others.

Streets which are closed include: Simmonds, Harrison, Loveday and Bree.

ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring said: “Apparently there are several patients with minor to moderate injuries and so far no fatalities have been reported”.

The public and motorists are urged to avoid the area.
