Man killed in road accident in Nkhata-Bay

A 44-year-old man died in Nkhata Bay on Sunday night after being hit by a heavy goods motor vehicle at Kanduli in the district.

Nkhata Bay Police Spokesperson, Sergeant, Kondwani James has identified the victim as Marko Phiri from Namkuyu Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Mkanda in Mulanje.

He said at the material time, a Freightliner Truck, registration number BX 5050/TO2483 was coming from Mzuzu, through the M5 Lakeshore Road, heading to Nkhata Bay when the driver lost control of it and hit Phiri.

“As the driver was descending a slope at Kanduli, he failed to negotiate an immediate right bend and lost control of the vehicle hence it went off lane and landed into Phiri who was heading towards the same direction,” James explained.

Following the impact, Phiri sustained severe head injuries, multiple fractures on both legs and serious cuts all over the body and was pronounced dead on the spot as per medical practitioner’s confirmation.

Meanwhile, the driver identified as Davie Biliat, 40 of Mtambo Village, TA Chimwala in Mangochi has been detained for further investigation.
