Chakwera urges Malawians to unite in the Fight against disease outbreaks

President Lazarus Chakwera has advised Malawians to unite and follow health guidelines in order to prevent outbreaks of diseases which have claimed lives of many Malawians.

The Malawi reader said this on Tuesday during the National Community Health Day (NCHD) commemoration and re-launch of the Human Papilloma Vaccine (HPV), Tipewe Cholera and Covid-19 campaign in Likoma District.

Addressing people at the event Chakwera said the country cannot afford another round of illness and deaths that were caused by COVID-19 and Cholera outbreaks.

“We cannot afford another round of illnesses and deaths that were occasioned on us by cholera and Covid-19 when prevention remains the key intervention. The cholera outbreak has been successfully controlled even though lately Blantyre, Chikwawa, Lilongwe and Nsanje have been reporting few isolated cases with no deaths and we want this figure to go down to zero,” Chakwera said.

He added that launching of the Tipewe Cholera and Covid-19 campaign in Likoma District will help intensify preventive measures against the two diseases, as the rainy season is fast  approaching.

“Therefore, realizing that the rain season is fast approaching, during this 10-day campaign, every household, community and individual will be reached with the cholera and Covid-19 prevention package,” said Chakwera.

Speaking at the event Senior Chief Mkumpha believes expansion of Chima Health Centre which Chakwera inspected, construction of more houses for health personnel and also construction of a tarmac road will help improve delivery of health services.

Before presiding over the commemoration Chakwera toured construction of an Out Patient Department (OPD) at Chima Health Centre, he also visited the K13 billion Likoma Port which is under construction and he visited the solar site.
