Suspected Anthrax case reported in Mzimba South

The Mzimba South District Health Office has confirmed a suspected case of Anthrax, a zoonotic disease caused by bacteria and it is transmitted from infected livestock or wild animals to humans.

The suspected case involving an eight year old girl, falls under Kalikumbi Health Centre which borders Lundazi District in Zambia. Two cases were confirmed early this month in Lundazi.

Mzimba South Director of Health and Social Services (DHSS), Dr. Prince Chirwa says a rapid response team has been sent to verify.

“We don’t have full information of the case as it was only reported from a private clinic. However we have sent our District rapid response team to investigate the case.

“The team has gone to verify if this information is true. They will send a preliminary report that I should be able to share with you once they have arrived there,” he says.

Zambia has so far recorded 335 cases and four deaths.
