Match fixing suspects granted court bail in Blantyre

The Dalton Court in Limbe on Monday afternoon granted bail to five individuals accused of attempting to manipulate Sunday’s Southern Region Football League Final between Ntopwa FC and Fomo FC.

The accused are Fomo Director Mary Woodworth, businessman Billy Sevele, Blantyre Referees Committee General Secretary Alfred Kaphamtengo, Bangwe All Stars Director Mphatso Jika and the Club’s Administrator, Willard Banda.

They all appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Akya Mwanyongo where they were charged with two counts each.

The first count is conspiracy to commit a felony while the second count is corrupt practices.

According to the charge sheet, the five offered referee Mayamiko Kanjere K1.2 million to favour Fomo in the match.

The case has been adjourned to March 01.

Kanjere did not officiate the match as earlier arranged and was instead replaced by Mwayi Msungama.

Fomo won 4-3 on post-match penalties and automatically earned promotion to the Super League.
