Elephant kills a woman in Dedza

A 45 year old woman is reportedly dead after a stray elephant trampled on her in area of Chilasamungo Village in Dedza District.

Dedza District Police spokesperson Beatrice Jefita has confirmed of the development in an interview with the press, saying the accident happened yesterday around 5pm.

The deceased has been identified as Volontina Yonasi.

Jefita said that two elephants from Thunga forest escaped and invaded maize fields in the area attracting tension among villagers who stormed the maize field with an aim of chasing the elephants.

According to Jefita, law enforcers rushed to the scene after receiving a tip.

“Apolice ali mkati mokusa nyamazi, njobvu imodzi inalunjika komwe kunali malemuwa ndipo pofuna kuthawa a Yonasi anagwa zomwe zinapeleka mpata kwa njobvuyi kuti iwaponde,” said Jefita.

Yonasi died on the spot and her body is currently being kept at Dedza District Hospital.
