A court in Thyolo has found a couple guilty of hiding tobacco in food they intended to deliver to their relative who is in police custody at the district’s police station.

Judge James Balakasi has ordered the individuals, Jackson Phiri, 30, and his wife Ellena Jumbe, 30, to each pay a fine of K50,000 or serve three months in prison.

Government prosecutor Dyson Mozhent informed the court that the two were arrested with the food they were bringing for Mrs. Jumbe’s sister, Chimwemwe Dunken Jumbe, who had been arrested by the police on suspicion of pouring hot porridge on her mother.

The couple, who are from the area of Senior Chief Nchiramwera, were charged with causing a disturbance at the police station.
