All set for Malawi Olympic Committee polls, Kanjala to go unopposed

Malawi Olympic Committee Elective Annual General Assembly is all set for Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi on March 22 with incumbent President Oscar Kanjala expected to retain the post unopposed.

Kanjala is the only presidential candidate on the nominated list endorsed by the association’s Judicial Commission, according to a press statement released by MOC Administration Manager, Naomi Chinatu.

But vice-president Flora Mwandira will face competition from Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) president Ben Mlasaanthu to retain her position.
The other female, Secretary General Helene Mpinganjira will also battle it out with incumbent Treasurer Jappie Mhango for her position.
Executive member Henry Sakala, who is newly elected Boxing Association of Malawi President will have walkover with no opposition to replace Mhango.
Football Association of Malawi Technical Director, who is also Technical Chairman of MOC has been nominated for the position of Vice-Secretary General alongside former Treasure Laurie Arthur and Swimming Association of Malawi President Dean Pinto.
Incumbent member Jimmy Kadewere, Handball Association of Malawi General Secretary Dennis Kumwenda and Pinto will also tussle for the executive member mandate.
Athlete representative Ken Dzekedzeke, who is the country’s 800m record holder achivede in 1988, is also assured of retaining the seat.
But Mwandira and Mpinganjira could stand a chance to remain in the board should they fail by being co-opted because of a 20 percent female representation requirement set by International Olympic Committee.
The elected candidates are expected to hold a four-year-of office.
