Actor Tumpe Mtaya, popularly known as Phwedo, is appearing at the Lilongwe Magistrate Court today as Principal Resident Magistrate Benjamin Chulu continues hearing his high-profile child sex abuse case.

Mtaya is facing two serious charges: the alleged sexual assault of a child and child trafficking. He is currently on bail, which was granted by the court last month.

In a related development, the court is also expected to deliver a ruling on a request made by Mtaya’s legal team. His lawyers have asked the court to compel the government to provide all necessary documents supporting the case, including those the alleged victim used to register for the Form Four national examinations and a medical certificate to confirm her age.

The issue of documentation emerged during last week’s hearing, raising questions about the credibility and completeness of the evidence being presented.

The case continues to attract public attention, given Mtaya’s public profile and the serious nature of the charges.
