Zambian music sensation Towera Kaira has spoken out boldly about her fashion choices and career journey, saying her performance attire is part of her art  and if some people don’t understand it, that’s not her problem.

Speaking on the Kenny T One-on-One Podcast, Towela said she dresses modestly most of the time, and what may seem “extra” to others is simply part of her performance identity.

“Most people don’t understand music and the dress code that comes with performing,” she said. “It’s like being mad at someone who can’t swim  they just can’t. Everyone is living their lives.”

Kaira, sister to celebrated Zambian artists Macky 2 and Chef 187, said she never relied on her famous brothers to build her name in the music industry. Instead, she took the long road, focusing on developing her own talent.

“I grew up singing in church and in school choirs in Ndola,” she said. “I didn’t even know I could dance until I decided to learn. I just knew I loved music.”

After losing her parents at a young age, Kaira moved to Lusaka and lived with her brothers before they moved out. She shared that although she could have easily jumped into collaborations with them, she chose to establish herself independently.

“People say it was easier for me because of my brothers. But opportunity only finds you when you’ve already put in the work,” Kaira said. “I waited. I knew my time would come.”

She confidently added, “Vocally, no one can beat me in this industry.”

The singer also recalled how she gained international recognition when Nigerian artist Mr. Eazi selected her as one of 100 African musicians to receive support to market their songs.

“I applied and I knew I’d be picked  because I’m good. That moment changed everything,” she said.

Kaira’s breakthrough came with her hit song Delay, which cemented her place in the Zambian music scene. She also revealed one of her major career disappointments  a failed collaboration with Nigerian star Ruger.

“Everything was set, but life happened and the deal fell through. It was disappointing, but that’s part of the journey,” she said.

Despite the challenges, Kaira remains focused on her growth and encourages young artists to be authentic.

“Don’t copy me. Be yourself unapologetically,” she urged. “People may try to shame you just because your light shines brighter. But be you — even when you’re wrong, still be you.”

Kaira said she draws inspiration from global stars like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Usher, and Ne-Yo, but remains proud of her Zambian roots and her brothers’ influence  especially Macky 2’s cool sound.

“I never lived under their shadow. I’m privileged to have them, but I carved my own path,” she said.
