At least 17 people have been arrested in Mzuzu City for being accused of damaging property and causing violence during the demonstrations which happened in the city on Tuesday. People were demonstrating in order to force the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja to resign from her position and also MEC to change its decision of using Smartmatic system during the upcoming 16 September elections.

The demonstrations started peacefully but later became destructive when people began breaking the laws by smashing shops windows, damaging vehicles and also forcing motorists to pay them some money.

According to Northern Religion Police spokesperson Maurice Chapola, the suspects are now in the police custody and they will appear before court as soon as the police finish their investigations.

Chapola also reminded people to protest peacefully and follow laws while respecting the rights of others.
