The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has issued a statement denying rumors circulating on social media about the resignation of its Chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja.
According to MEC’s Director of Media and Public Relations, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, the information is completely false and should be disregarded.
In a statement, Mwafulirwa emphasized that Justice Mtalimanja remains fully committed to her role and continues to discharge her duties as per her constitutional mandate.
The Commission urges the public and stakeholders to verify election-related information through official channels, including the MEC website, press statements, and verified social media accounts.
The rumors come amid growing concerns about Mtalimanja’s leadership and allegations of her having ties to the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
Some opposition parties have called for her resignation, citing potential conflicts of interest and lack of impartiality in the electoral process.
Opposition parties, including the United Transformation Movement (UTM), Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), and Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), have expressed fears about the MEC’s ability to manage the electoral process effectively.
They argue that Mtalimanja’s leadership may compromise the integrity of the upcoming elections.
The MEC’s denial of the resignation rumors aims to reassure the public and stakeholders about the Commission’s commitment to its mandate.
However, the controversy surrounding Mtalimanja’s leadership highlights the need for transparency and impartiality in the electoral process.
