The Secretary General of South Africa’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, Floyd Shivambu, has been removed from his position following controversy surrounding his visit to Malawi. Shivambu made headlines after attending Good Friday prayers at the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) church, led by Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, in Lilongwe.
The MK party has since reassigned Shivambu to serve as a Member of Parliament, a move that comes amid tensions linked to his recent trip.
His visit sparked debate given the ongoing diplomatic tensions between South Africa and Malawi, particularly regarding Bushiri, who left South Africa while on bail facing multiple criminal charges. South African authorities continue to seek his extradition.
The MK party, founded by former South African President Jacob Zuma, reportedly stated at the time that Shivambu traveled to Malawi in his personal capacity.
