Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the Northern Region, Jappie Mhango, has been granted bail by the Chief Resident Magistrate Court in Mzuzu following his arrest on Monday.
Mhango appeared before the court on Tuesday afternoon, where he was officially informed of the reasons for his arrest.
The former Minister of Transport and Public Works is facing two charges: abuse of public office—stemming from allegations that he purchased a house from the Ministry of Transport at an undervalued price during his tenure as minister—and providing false information to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) with the intent to obstruct investigations.
The state informed the court that two additional suspects are yet to be arrested. As such, Mhango did not take a plea, with the expectation that he will do so alongside the other suspects once they are in custody.
In his ruling on the bail application, Chief Resident Magistrate Godfrey Balaka granted bail to Mhango under the following conditions:
-
He must pay a cash bond of K1 million.
-
He is required to report to the ACB office in Mzuzu every fortnight on Wednesdays.
-
He must provide two reliable sureties, each bonded at K500,000.
