Illovo Sugar Malawi has held a Safety Day event today, at Nchalo Estate in Chikwawa, aimed at promoting health and safety among employees.
The event began with a big walk in the morning, bringing together company staff, Traditional leaders and community members in order to raise awareness on the importance of safety at work.
Speaking during the event, Senior Chief Lundu took the opportunity to speak out on behalf of workers. He expressed concerns over how some employees are being mistreated at the company.
According to Chief Lundu, workers complained about heavy tax deduction, poor quality meals and unsafe housing conditions.
‘Stop using your workers like slaves, they may be afraid to speak but they bring their complains to me as their leader,’ said chief Lundu.
He urged Illovo Sugar Malawi to ensure better treatment and improve working conditions for all employees.
