The Chiradzulu Magistrate Court has sentenced Councillor Douglas Mkweza of Mwanje Ward to a one-year suspended sentence after he was found guilty of attempting to sell a council-owned grader.

Delivering the judgment, First Grade Magistrate Smart Maluwasa said the court considered the fact that Mkweza is a first-time offender and that the grader, which he attempted to sell, was recovered by the Chiradzulu District Council.

The offense took place in 2023, when Councillor Mkweza allegedly offered the grader for sale to a Tanzanian national at a price of K3 million.

Magistrate Maluwasa said the suspended sentence means Mkweza will not serve jail time unless he commits another offense within the next year.
