Machete Men Disrupt Protest in Lilongwe, Beat Protest Leader

A group of machete men violently disrupted a protest at Community Square in Lilongwe today, scattering demonstrators who had gathered for the event.
Eyewitnesses from Mzati reported that the attackers appeared suddenly and began beating Citizens for Credible Elections leader Sylvester Namiwa with sticks and machetes. The incident took place in full view of police officers and Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers who were present at the scene.
The violent group quickly chased away all protesters, bringing the demonstration to an abrupt halt.
The motive or identity of the attackers remains unclear.
