NAP & CSEIF Condemn Violence Against Peaceful Demonstration in Lilongwe

National Advocacy Platform (NAP) and the Civil Society Elections Integrity Forum (CSEIF) have strongly condemned the violent attack on peaceful protesters that took place in Lilongwe on June 26, 2025.
The protesters who were gathered at Lilongwe Community Ground voice their concerns with the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) but were dispensed by panga-wielding thugs who turn it into violent .
According to the press statement signed by Chairperson for NAP and CSEIF, Benedicto Kondowe which was released on 26 June this violence occurred in the presence of officers from the Malawi Police Service and Malawi Defence Force, who did not intervene.
The organizations expressed deep concern that vehicles belonging to the protesters were set on fire, which posed a serious threat to lives and property.
They emphasized that every Malawian has the constitutional right to demonstrate peacefully and express opinions freely, as guaranteed by Sections 37 and 38 of the Constitution and reinforced by international human rights agreements.
NAP and CSEIF called on the Malawi Police to investigate and prosecute those involved in the violence, including officers who failed to act.
They also urged political parties to reject and stop supporting any form of violence during demonstration, warning that such actions undermine democracy and the rule of role.
