41-Year-Old Man Sentenced Five Years in Prison For Threatening To Kill His Mother

Court in Mulanje has convicted and sentenced a 41-year-old man identified as Howard Michenga to 5 years in prison threatening to kill his own mother.
The court heard that on 23 March, 2025, Michenga came home drunk and started shouting at his mother, accusing her of removing sweet potato vines from his garden. When she told him that they should talk about it later because he was drunk, he got angry and violent.
Michenga threw a stone at his mother and picked up a hoe handle and a panga knife, saying he would kill her. Fearing for her life, the mother ran away and spent the whole night hiding in the bush. The next morning, she reported the incident to community policing members, who helped to arrest Michenga.
In court, he denied the charges, but two witnesses gave strong evidence against him.
First Grade Magistrate George Chimombo found Michenga guilty, saying his actions brought fear and tension in the home and community. He then sentenced him five years in prison.
Howard Michenga hails from Jumbe Village Traditional Authority chikumbu in Mulanje District.
