The Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture, through its Deputy Director at the Censorship Board, Anganile Nthakomwa, has strongly criticized Afana Ceez and his fellow artists over their recently released track “LAKO Remix.”

In an interview with The Nation Newspaper, Nthakomwa said the song contains explicit language and demeaning references to women, portraying them as sex objects and weak beings, which is a direct violation of Malawi’s Censorship and Publications Act.

“The song is laced with vulgar content, disrespectful language, and promotes a negative portrayal of women. The laws are very clear when it comes to what should and shouldn’t be recorded or published in Malawi,” she said.

The original version of “LAKO” was performed by Afana Ceez and Nare Rae, but the controversial remix later featured verses from other popular artists like Ace Jizzy, KBanton, Crispy Malawi, and Morale The Rapper.

Nthakomwa warned that if the artists continue releasing such material, the Board may impose stiffer penalties, including banning their future songs.

In his response, Afana Ceez defended the song, saying it was part of long-standing hip-hop culture where artists celebrate and praise women’s physical features.

“This is just a playful hip-hop track. I’m not the first artist to mention or praise women’s booty in songs. It’s part of global music trends,” Ceez said.

However, Nthakomwa maintained that Malawi’s cultural values and legal standards must be respected, regardless of global music trends.
