Malawi Film “The Gunless Soldier” Selected for Screening in France

Malawian filmmaker Joyce Mhango Chavula has achieved another milestone as her film “The Gunless Soldier” has been officially selected for screening at the Africa USA International Film Festival in France.
The festival, which showcases African cinema on an international platform, will run from August 7 to 12, 2025, bringing together filmmakers and audiences from across the world.
Speaking to Times, Chavula expressed excitement, saying the selection is a clear indication that Malawi’s film industry is making significant strides on the global stage.
“This is a big moment for us. It shows that Malawian storytelling and creativity are gaining recognition beyond our borders,” she said.
“The Gunless Soldier” features a cast of nearly 60 actors, among them Edwin Chonde, Ashukire Mwakisulu, Mphatso Chikuni, Neria Chikhosi, and Kelvin Ngoma.
The film’s selection adds to Chavula’s growing list of achievements as one of Malawi’s leading filmmakers, inspiring more local creators to aim for international platforms.
